10 Myths About Tiles You Shouldn’t Fall For
December 19, 2025
We’ve been in this business for a while, and in that time we’ve heard a lot: tiles are fragile, they’re cold, they feel sterile, or they aren’t quite right for this particular project. The truth is that there are now so many varieties of tile and so many different applications that many of the old myths you’ve heard about tiles aren’t true anymore. Many of them never were.
Here are 10 myths about tiles that you shouldn’t fall for.
Tiles Are Slippery
Not all tiles have a smooth, glossy finish. Many tile options are available with textured or anti-slip surfaces designed for improved grip in areas like in your kitchen or bathroom.
Bleach & Vinegar Are Ideal Cleaners
Harsher is not always better, and there is a misconception that tile can always stand up to chemicals like bleach. That isn’t always the case. Vinegar can damage certain kinds of natural tile, and over time bleach can cause grout to crumble. Use a designated tile or all purpose cleaner regularly and be mindful of natural stone that requires more upkeep.
Tiles Are Stain-Proof
It’s true that tiles are generally more resistant to stains. But some tiles — especially unglazed or natural stone tiles — are more porous and can stain if you allow a mess to sit.
Matte Tiles Attract Dust
Dust can become trapped in more textured tile, it’s true, but it is not true that more dust tends to settle on matte tiles than on a polished surface.
Tiles Feel Cold
In fact, many modern tiles are good conductors of heat. If you have a heated floor, a porcelain tile might actually be a better bet than other materials. You can even get one that looks like wood.
Tiles Chip & Crack Easily
Most tiles are built for long term durability, and while they should be handled with care prior to installation, chips and cracks are more often the result of improper installation.
Larger Tiles Make Rooms Smaller
Larger tiles also means fewer grout lines, which can create the illusion of more space.
Natural Tiles Are Always Preferable
Natural tiles are beautiful and they can make a space feel more luxurious. But they aren’t always practical for every space, and some require regular sealing and maintenance. Created tiles can convincingly mimic other materials including natural stone like marble.
Grout Is All The Same
There are several different kinds of grout for different applications and tile types. Some are more porous, some are better suited for larger grout lines, some have different textures.
Larger Tiles Are Easier To Install
Larger tiles are typically more difficult to install. Surface preparation underneath the tile needs to be more precise, and maneuvering and cutting the tile tends to be more labour intensive. But in many cases, it’s worth it.
