4 Tile Tricks to Make A Room Look Bigger

March 05, 2024

Space is at a premium in most homes these days. Luckily, if you’re planning on re-tiling either your floors or a backsplash, there are a few key decisions you can make to create the impression of more space.

1. Go Bigger with Tile

Choosing larger format tiles for floors and backsplashes reduces the breaks and lines which makes the available space feel more expansive. With smaller tiles, the eye is drawn to a smaller area, which will naturally feel busier.

2. Go Smaller with Grout

The narrower your grout lines, the less pronounced the break in the pattern. To create a sense of space, you’re after seamlessness, which means you should aim for smaller grout lines.

3. Diagonal Patterns

You also want to pay attention to the pattern you use. On floors, for example, checker patterns can make a square room appear smaller. A diagonal or criss-cross pattern, on the other hand, especially on the floor, draws the eye to the widest part of the pattern, creating a greater sense of space.

4. Avoid Sharp Contrasts

You’ve likely heard the advice to “stay away from dark colours” if you’re using tile in a small room. There’s a reason. Light neutral colours reflect natural light to create a sense of openness. But one of the things that detracts from this effect is contrasts — different coloured tiles, backsplashes that differ sharply in colour from counters, dark grout lines paired with lighter tiles, etc.
