5 Tile Trends You’ll Regret by 2030
January 31, 2026
At Trini Tile, we’re big fans of experimenting with tiles, but we’re even bigger fans of designs that don’t go out of style. That’s why when we browse trends, we always make sure to discern between timeless design and flash-in-the-pan fads. These are five trends that we don’t think will be around for very long.
The Trend: Delft Tiles
Named by Homes and Gardens as a top trend for 2025, Delft tiles are a traditional glazed blue and white tile that features hand painted scenes and images; they’re popular in the UK and are often used for quaint kitchen and bathroom backsplashes. While we’re definitely on board with character and personality in your designs, we think that these tiles are a touch too traditional, difficult to design with, and will not have much staying power in the future.
What To Do Instead
If you’re seeking a tile that fits an English Cottage or Farmhouse aesthetic but still ensures a timeless look, we suggest using a 9 X 9 square White or Blue tile, with thin, dark grout, like the kitchen below.
The Trend: Striped Tile Patterns
Stripe patterns have become very popular among designers, and this has carried over to tiles. Designers will usually use two highly contrasting tiles and create vertical stripes in showers and bathrooms. While this trend may look fun on magazine covers, the repetition and contrast are a bit overwhelming and won’t age well in real, long-term living spaces.
What To Do Instead
To stay both bold and visually palatable, you could go for a checkerboard pattern, like the below design. We suggest opting for tiles like Bone and White to create an appealing, neutral vibe. If you insist on the stripes, then we would recommend using subtle colours for a more understated pairing.
The Trend: Finger Tiles
Finger tiles are long, narrow rectangular tiles that are popular for backsplashes, showers, and kitchens. This trend is intended to create a modern and spacious look to fit with a contemporary aesthetic. However, since the tiles are so small and usually completely white, they come off as clinical and overstimulating. Because of that, we think this trend will (and has already started to) look stale and flavourless in the coming years.
What To Do Instead
If you’re looking for a sleek and dynamic tile option, then you could opt for a herringbone pattern using Grafito or Marine from the Trendy Series. This will offer a stimulating pattern and the colours will give it good dose of personality that won’t go out of style.
The Trend: Tile Drenching
As a tile store, we’re all for using lots and lots of tiles in a design, but even so, there has to be a line somewhere, and that line stops at tile drenching. The trend involves layering every part of a room in tile, often including the ceiling and floor. Since these designs don’t create much contrast between the wall, floor, and ceiling, they usually lack a visual focal point. For that reason, we are putting this trend on the “fad list.”
What To Do Instead
To pull off multiple tile surfaces in a bathroom or shower, we suggest using colours and materials that create visual contrast. You could use a marbled tile like White for the walls and contrast it with a solid colour tile for the floor.
The Trend: Plaid Tile
Yes, this is a trend, and no, we don’t think it will last very long. Plaid tile, as the name suggests, involves coloured tiles arranged in a plaid pattern. It usually features square tiles in at least three contrasting colours, and it’s often applied to floors and backsplashes. Since the pattern is very repetitive and complicated, it attracts a bit too much attention and creates a visual imbalance in a space.
What To Do Instead
If you’re looking for a better a way to add some “pizazz” to a space, then we suggest experimenting with your grout colour. You could opt for a colourful tile like Rosa, and pair it with white grout, or a neutral tile like White, and use an experimental colour to really make it pop. And if you’re looking for something a little more retro, you could opt for square tiles in the tasteful checkerboard pattern mentioned above.
