Our Favourite Online Tile Trends and How to Achieve Them

October 27, 2025

Without the right inspiration and references, it's hard to create a space that you really love. And that’s especially true when selecting tiles. That’s why we’ve found three of our favourite online trends and the tiles you need to achieve them.

Tasteful Checkerboard

This approach takes the classic checkerboard pattern and applies it in a classy and universal way. It features small tiles with muted colours or large black and white tiles with light marbling. The former can add a fun touch to a mud room, laundry room, or bathroom, and the latter can help create beautiful foyers and hallways — they work well with a traditional or retro-inspired aesthetic.

Blue and dark green tiles create a visually stimulating, retro-inspired floor.

Black and white checkered floor tiles can be used to create or enhance a European design aesthetic.

A checkerboard pattern offers a great option for transitional wainscotting from the bathroom to the shower.

How to Achieve It

To achieve the black and white look, we recommend using Nera and Capraia in the 24” X 24” size. The tiles’ light marbling will help soften the black and white contrast. This style works best if the tiles are set in a “diamond” pattern, at a 45-degree angle to the wall.

And to achieve the small tile look, we suggest using tiles from Trini Tile’s UP Series, in the 4” X 4” size. You could try colour combinations like Blue and Bone, or Grey and White, depending on the colour scheme of your space.

Textured Tile

Textured, Zellige, or “organic” looking tiles are one of the most popular tile design trends of the last few years. This style features tiles with warped and imperfect surfaces that can be used to create a wide range of effects.

Square tiles can be used to create a subtle organic look that pairs well with a rustic stone sink or bamboo-framed mirror.

Imperfect surfaces can be used to create contrast with the clean-cut lines of cabinetry and countertops.

How to Achieve It

Use tiles from our Acuarela Series or Trendy Series. The former features a subtle, imperfect look, while the latter gives an even more organic and natural vibe.

Bold Colours & Contrasting Grout

This trend features tiles with a decisive, bold colour, and contrasting grout. It makes bright tiles pop even more and adds flair to lighter ones. It’s great for retro or maximalist design styles.

White grout is a popular choice to break up monochromatic colour schemes.

Blue can be a bold but less jarring option for spaces like bathrooms.

Bright-coloured grout will make white tiles pop and accentuate accompanying accessories and fixtures.

How to Achieve It

To achieve this look, you’ll want to choose a statement colour. For a backsplash, Rosa would contrast nicely with white grout. And if you opt for a lighter colour, like White from the UP Series, you could use grout colourant to make the tiles pop.
